LTN AWARDS NOMINATIONS DEADLINE 12/4
Glitches
Won't Deter Us! In the no-good-deed-goes-unpunished department, we've
encountered a few bumps after we decided to waive the fees and extend the
deadline for nominations for the 2009 LTN Law Firm and Law Department
Awards, and our new "Lifetime Achievement" award.
First,
because we have waived the fees, nominators need not be affiliated with the
organization or person being nominated. So everyone, including
vendors, may nominate candidates for these awards. However, the potential
recipient must be affiliated with a law firm or law department.
Second,
members of LTN's Editorial Advisory Board (and spouses, [in]significant
others, and family members) are eligible for nomination. Only the judges are
ineligible (Andy Adkins, Fred Lederer, and David Whelan); but they may be
nominated for the Lifetime Achievement award because I choose that winner.
However, the potential recipient must be at least age 55 by
12/31/09.
Finally,
we're experiencing problems with some completed nomination forms (PDFs) -- some
are not opening properly (they open blank). So be sure that you
save a hard copy before you e-mail it to us. If we encounter any problems
opening the PDF, we will allow you to fax the document to us on Monday.
Here's the downloadable nomination form. And here's more 411.

KUDOS TO KODNER
Ross Kodner, a frequent contributor to Law Technology News, and even more frequent speaker across the country at small firm and solo programs, will be honored this month by the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Bar
Association.
Kodner will receive the first annual John Lederer Solo and Small
Firm Service Award at the Wisconsin Solo and
Small Firm conference (Oct. 29-31.)
“The WSSF Conference
leadership felt this award was needed to recognize those individuals,
groups or organizations which have focused on improving the lives and
practices of solo and small firm attorneys in Wisconsin,” says
Nancy Trueblood, Wauwatosa, Solo and Small Firm Committee chair. "The
award will be presented annually to an individual, group, or
organization exemplifying the leadership, spirit, and dedication of
attorney John Lederer, who saw it as his mission to help solo and small
firm lawyers master the skills and technology needed to build their
practices. Lederer passed away in March of 2009," the group reports.
“Ross deserves to be the first recipient of this award due to
his numerous, tireless volunteer efforts over the years on behalf of
solo and small firm attorneys,” says Trueblood. “Whether he
is speaking at a conference or seminar, blogging or answering questions
on State Bar electronic lists, his advice and guidance has been
invaluable to Wisconsin solo and small firm practitioners.”
Read Kodner's most recent LTN article, "Increase Your Wingspan" (about installing dual monitors for your computer, here.
Congratulations, Ross. A very well-deserved accolade!

DEADLINE 8/31 TO NOMINATE VENDORS
Rust never sleeps: Just a reminder that you have until Monday to nominate your company for the 2009 LTN Vendor Awards -- selected by the readers of Law Technology News!
To refresh your memory: Here’s how it works:
There are three food groups: 1) Vendor Awards, 2) Law Firm & Legal Department Awards, and 3) a brand new category, Lifetime Achievement Award.
Law Technology News subscribers vote for the Vendor Awards; an independent jury of three members of LTN’s editorial advisory board select the LF/LD awards, and I will pick the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement accolade, who will be chosen from our wonderful legal technology community.
To win a vendor or LF/LD award, the organization or person must be nominated. It’s a very, very, easy process — just download the form and return it to us — by 8/31/09 for vendor categories, and by 11/6/09 for LF/LD nominations.
You can also use the LF/LD form to nominate a candidate for the Lifetime Achievement award (limited to age 55+), but in that category, unlike the lottery, you can win even if you are not nominated. (I welcome all suggestions!)

ASBPE GOLD x2
Craig Ball is a magician -- he can turn the dryest, most esoteric
nuance of e-discovery into a compelling story that rivals the latest Grisham
offering. His vocabulary is unmatched; he always finds the perfect word to illuminate the most dense concept, yet never succumbs to jargon. Like
other exquisite storytellers, he uses everyday analogies -- comparing EDD
processes to television shows (CSI), murder scenes with blood hounds, or World War II
challenges faced by his father.
And he is an editor's dream: his copy comes in
crisp and on time, and he always monitors the published version for mistakes
(which speeds online corrections). Not only does Ball write for Law
Technology News, he also is a steady, pithy contributor to EDD Update www.eddupdate.com.So it's no surprise
that Ball has collected a basket full of awards for his fine work. Last night,
he won another gold, for "best contributed column" in the Northeast regional
competition of the American Society of Business Publications. Check out "SNAFU" and
"Brain Drain."
We were also were
thilled to learn that my article, "Can You Adapt?" which analyzed the
changing roles of EDD attorneys, paralegals, and litigation support staff, also
won gold, in the "best technical article" category. Of course, our amazing art
director Shane DeLeers shares the glory in both wins -- he always finds the
perfect illustration that makes our words sizzle!
That brings us to five awards for our work in 2008 -- the most we've ever won in a single awards season: A design award from GD USA; two ASBPE gold, and two honorable mentions from the Tabbies! Thanks to our entire team!

The War of Words chronicled how the father of a soldier killed in Iraq successfully sued religious fanatics who picketed the son's funeral with homophobic signs.
Repeatable Defense covered how Orrick partner Peter Bicks developed protocols and templates to help the firm defend Union Carabide Corp. on multiple claims.
• We also took one of three honorable mentions in the Editor's Column category, for my rant about gender pay inequality in the legal profession, and my account of a trip with my mother to the Flight 93 memorial.
We are absolutely thrilled. To read about other winners, visit the TABPI site.

The group plans to host quarterly events on the East Coast, between D.C. and NYC, and will collaborate with Chicago and LA chapters. For details, e-mail her here.
• Kevin Iredell, our ace marketing director, asks me to remind everybody that nominations are now open for the 2008 LTN Awards, which honor the IT Champion of the Year, IT Director of the Year, and the best innovations in trials, law firms, corporate law departments and pro bono programs. MAILBAG #082909
This year is just flying by... I'm realllllly happy to see the first hints of fall, as the humidity drops in NYC and it becomes wonderful again.
Here are a few items from the inbox:
• David Horrigan -- who manages to find some of the most interesting litigation (steady readers will recall his detailed coverage of the woes of Mr. Softee) -- wrote this recent article for The National Law Journal about a lawsuit filed in California by a disabled fan who argued that he is entitled to unobstructed views at NASCAR events. The appellate court agreed. The story was picked up by the gang over at the legal blogging team at The Wall Street Journal here.
• The American Bar Assn
held its annual meeting here in NYC last month, and among the events
was a session of the Scribes, a legal writers organization, who honored
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Here's West's blog about it, with video.
• Kudos to my alma mater: Also during the ABA meeting, the
University of San Francisco Law School had a reception for its alum,
where Dean Jeffrey Brand gave a very moving presentation about the
school's continuing efforts to create a truly diverse student body --
with pretty breathtaking results. The 2007 entering class of 250 had
40% students of color -- 10% African American, 10% Hispanic, 16% Asian
American, 4% other. Those are staggeringly high figures, and as a 1982
alumn, I am very proud of my law school.
Other stats tell of the challenges: Full time tuition next year will
be $17,900. Nonetheless, there were 3,584 applications for 190 fulltime
and 60 part time spots for the 2008 entering class. More info here.
• Henry Dicker and his team are already gearing up for LegalTech New York early next year, and are especially excited about a new feature that will launch -- the LegalTech Town Hall.
It will be lead by Patrick Oot -- Verizon's director of e-discovery and senior counsel. The idea is that LTNY attendees will be able to submit specific questions for the panel via video blog.
Patrick (a frequent speaker on LTN webinars and a member of LTN's edit board) The session will be sponsored by Guidance Software and held Monday Feb 2 at 12:45, open to all attendees. More details will be coming soon -- you can check in at www.legaltechshow.com for updates.
Meanwhile, we're also planning a General Counsel Technology SuperSession -- produced by Counsel Connect's editor Anthony Paonita and moi -- which we expect to record for my Law Technology Now podcasts -- after our huge success with the LegalTech West Coast FutureTech podcasts. Details TK here and on the LTNY site.
• Speaking of Anthony, he dropped by to tell me about a terrific website, www.flytecomm.com -- which tracks actual flight status. When his family was returning from Italy, and a bunch o' flights were delayed because of nasty thunderstorms, the website had more accurate arrival info than the airline staff. (Why am I not surprised?) FlyteTrax II combines graphics, maps and flight information to show enroute flights, weather and flight listings in one product. Individual flights can be tracked for free here.
• On the third anniversary of Katrina, my thoughts are not straying far from New Orleans today. I'm worried about my pals -- including Connie Nichols, Janine & Bruce Sylvas, Nancy Claypool, Tom O'Connor, Ernie Svenson, and Eric Barefield, the Brown family, et al. — please stay safe and on high ground until Gustav fades. Let's hope Mother Nature is kind this week.

MO MAILBAG #080806
Still more incoming:
• Kevin Hunt checked in from July's American Association of Law Libraries Portland (Ore) meeting to let us know that West posted a "Westcast" with Leonard Lee, about how the "Google generation" is approaching legal research. Check it out here.
And on the Westblog, Bob Azman, vp of West's "customer experience operations," invites you to contact him directly about your experiences and needs — echoing a theme of our July LTN cover story by Alvin Podboy, who dares legal librarians to start talking to legal publishing vendors. For more info, you can reach Hunt here.
• Update on the laptop seizures controversy: The Association of Corporate Travel Executives' exec director Susan Gurley testified before Congress about the ongoing controversy over seizures of business travelers' laptops. Details here.
• LTN's Safia Maharaj found this tech/beisbol/charity item, "Text Me Out to the Ballgame" -- about a pilot project between the Washington Nationals and MLB.com (major league baseball's website) to raise money for the Children's National Medical Center's proposed Diabetes Care Complex. During the day game on 7/13, fans were invited to text "NATS" to 90999 to donate $5 -- a tactic also used during the All Star Game at Yankee Stadium to raise money to fight breast cancer. Clever and painless -- and less expensive than a soda at the Stadium. Let's see more of these! Check out the Mobile Giving Foundation here.
• Last call! The deadline's been extended until tomorrow (Friday) to nominate your company for the 2009 LTN Vendor Awards, which will presented at LegalTech New York in February. Check it out here. It's quick and easy, and as they say re: the New York Lottery, if you don't enter, you can't win.

MARY MACK KEYNOTES NFPA TECH INSTITUTE
Fios' Mary Mack stole the show at the two-day National Federation of Paralegal Associations' Tech Institute in Denver, July 25-26. Mack, corporate technology counsel at the Portland, Ore.-based company, was the keynote luncheon speaker on day 1, and wow'd the crowd with a speech that was both entertaining and jam-packed with substance.
In a presentation tailored specifically to the NFPA paralegal audience (isn't it amazing how few speakers actually do that?), Mack shared both war stories and concrete advice on how paralegals can deal with thorny EDD situations, which can put them in ethical dilemmas, during her presentation, "The Growing Role of Paralegals in eDiscovery." She offered sage and practical tips about how paralegals can work with attorneys and advance their careers.
She delved into the Qualcomm case, and sang the praises of Judge Grimm in Victor Stanley, among other recent case law. She handled questions with finesse and humor. And she held everyone's attention, without using a single PowerPoint slide. Excellent job!
Career advice was also a strong theme in Charlotte Riser Harris' panel, "Technical Skills for Paralegals," presentation, and in my presentation, "EDD Careers: How to Make More Money and Have More Influence." All of us stressed the explosive growth of e-discovery and both the pitfalls and opportunities that growth presents.
Persuasion Strategies' Pen Volkmann put on a fascinating program about using 3-D multimedia during trials, showing video from recent trials, including one featured in LTN's Technology on Trial. (Volkmann and his team rec'd the the 2007 LTN Award for Most Innovative Use of Technology in a Trial for his work in that case.)
Catalyst Repository Systems Inc.'s John Tredennick closed the day with a demonstration of how software can be used to help analyze issues in litigation, illustrating his talk with live examples of his company's software.
These were just a couple of the 25 scheduled presentations. Congrats to co-chairs Tamara Bigford (Goldberg Segalla) and Susan Ippoliti (Function 5 Forensics) and their team for putting together a terrific two-day event.
For more information about this event and future presentations, visit the association's website at www.paralegals.org.

GOLD & BRONZE TABBIES!
We've just received word that Craig Ball's Ball in Your Court column in Law Technology News has won Gold in the 2008 TABBIES awards, presented by the Trade Association Business Publications International. More than 700 publications competed in this international competition, and it's the second year in a row that Ball snared the top prize for best regular column. Congrats, Craig! Here's his most recent column.
Our EDD Showcase (October, with the anchor reported article, "An Undercurrent of Fear" ) took Bronze in the "Special Section" category.
Re: Ball in Your Court, the judges said: "Excellent layout. The writing is a departure from unnecessary legalese, with a nice explanation to the myth of evidence (page equivalency)."
Re: EDD Showcase: "Well balanced editorial, appropriate and applicable for the market it serves; articles well researched to give different opinions. Layout draws reader into topics, lives up to initial promise of magazine."
