About
The Common Scold

The Common Scold is named after a cause of action that originated in Pilgrim days, when meddlesome, argumentative, opinionated women who displeased the Puritan elders were punished by a brisk dunk in the local pond. Believe it or not, the tort lasted until 1972, when State v. Palendrano, 120 N.J. Super. 336, 293 A.2d 747 (N.J.Super.L., Jul 13, 1972) pretty much put it to rest. But the thought of those feisty women, not afraid of a little cold water, has always cheered me up and inspired me. I first used the moniker as the name of my humor column at the University of San Francisco School of Law many moons ago, and revive it now for this blawg!

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR LTN AWARDS NOMINEES

21585507_2 It's not too late to nominate your firm, law department, and leaders -- or somebody else's organization and leaders -- for our 2008 LTN Awards. The deadline has been extended one more week, to November 7.

As they say in the lottery, "you can't win if you don't enter." And I don't need to remind you about the importance of recognizing our peers -- especially in today's cut-throat competition environment. Too often, the tech community is invisible, ignored  -- or blamed, rather than acknowledged and praised for the key role we play in the development of the legal profession.

So this is your chance to SHOW OFF!!!!!  And it's easy! Just a simple form to fill out.

Here's the 411:
Law Technology News is proud to announce its 5th annual competition recognizing the best people and projects in legal technology.  Law firms and legal departments are eligible for nomination for these six awards:
I.T. Director
Champion of Technology
Most Innovative Use of Technology in a Law Firm
Most Innovative Use of Technology by an In-House Legal Department
Most Innovative Use of Technology During a Trial
Most Innovative Use of Technology For a Pro Bono Project

Deadline to nominate is November 7. The candidates will be evaluated by an independent team of three experts, all members of the LTN Editorial Advisory Board.
For more information, please visit www.lawtechnologynews.com   or call Kevin Iredell, at 800 888 8300 or email here.

Download nomination form here.  The awards will be presented at the LTN Technology Awards Dinner, at LegalTech New York on February 5, 2008.
